We booked Delta (thru Orbitz) back in June for a February trip and our non stop both ways suddenly changed from a non stop home to a layover in Mexico City, then Atlanta, then MPLS. Changing our 4 hour flight to 10 hours so we have canceled for now. We thought booking a head would be smart, guess not!

I thank AA through Dallas only flies into "Z" on Sat. There are some flights through Phoenix during the week- I was looking at a discount site and was routed through Phoenix but was flying all day. Flying down in Jan we are flying into Houston and then into MC to be able to keep from doing a overnight
with United- we are limited from Lexington, Ky trying to make the trip in 1 day either way.

We used to fly United through Houston, but after the merger, they seemed to have changed the schedule often requiring an overnight. Needless to say, we don't do that anymore. Now we fly Delta to Mexico City and then on to Zihua. We love the new(ish) terminal in DF, which makes connecting very easy. Also, customs is way more efficient than in Zihua. (Delta had a direct from Atlanta for only a short time a number of years ago, but they cancelled it before folks even realized that was an option.)

For sure the United merger has resulted in crappier schedules which is the main reason we don't fly UA anymore. To my knowledge, the only Southeast non-stop from ATL to ZIH was on Delta in 2006 and it was discontinued shortly thereafter.

There are multiple one-stop flights we've used from Atlanta if you can arrange to depart from ATL (3 hours from Huntsville). United flies ATL-Houston-ZIH. Delta flies ATL-MEX-Zihua. AeroMexico has a code share with Delta and does the same route.

Quick note about AeroMexico...yesterday we booked a flight online from ZIH to Oaxaca via Mexico City. AM would not accept my Capital One Venture card. Very strange since I used the same card to book a trip last spring. Called AM and learned that recently AM stopped accepting some rewards credit cards, presumably because there is a higher merchant fee levied. When I used a non-rewards credit card, it was accepted and the booking went through. So if you plan to use AeroMexico, you may want to have a non-rewards card as backup.

I can't seem to find a flight out of the southeast USA that only stops once. I would like to bypass Mexico City or Houston or both. I used to just stop at Houston and then straight to Zihuatanejo. Are all of the recent airline mergers the cause?
