You might want to look at Morelia. They still have lots of availability over the Day of the Dead on Hotels.com. That's where we'll be this year for our first day of the dead. We will likely visit Patsquaro on the night of the 1st or 2nd.

A couple of years ago, we stayed at Eco-hotel Ixhi. It may have changed hands since. The hotel is off the loop road about 3 blocks. It sits on the side of the hill with a open view of the lake and mountains in the back ground and the valley below. It was hard for us to find because we had come the wrong way- we had rented a car at the airport in "Z". At one of the hotels in town we got directions- go straight to the red light(loop road) make a left, go to the next light and make a right. When the street turned to gravel and started going up a hill we thought we were lost. After the curve going up the hill(there was a popular masseuse on the curve) a short distance there was building fenced in with a sign nailed to a tree (Econ-Hotel). When you went through the gate, the view of the lake and mountains is breath taking. This was April and it was cold at night and early morning. We always said if we went back to Patzquaro we would love to stay there. The hotel is a short taxi ride to the squares- well worth the view and quietness. You can find more info on Trip Adviser.

Friends who live in Zihua year around are staying at this same hotel. We are meeting them there the end of the month, prior to heading down the mountain. We have seen the outside of the hotel, and it looks good.

I went to Booking.com: Hotels in Paztcuaro and found this, the Hotel Valmen. It looks nice to me, the price is right, and they have one room available still.

We stayed at Posada de la Rosa on the Plaza Chica in Patzcuaro after reading a trip report recommending it. It was VERY basic, no frills, but clean and inexpensive, 300 pesos a night as I recall. No idea if they have availability but here is the address: Portal Juarez P. Alta, 29-3, 61600 Pátzcuaro. I do not see a phone number listed but you may be able to find one.

We arrive to Zihua on October 21.

So we decided to take 3 days to go to Patzcuaro for
el Dia de los Muertos. I know, I know... a bit late
to find lodging.

Our surprise was not that it was almost all booked,
but that the available rooms go for some very high
amounts of money. Most "force" you to stay for three
nights and go for around $1,200USD !! with continental
breakfast included of course.

Wished there was a 'secret' B&B that nobody knows which
had rooms available. On recommendations from this forum
we called Casa Encantada. Looks wonderful but it is
also fully booked.

Oh well, maybe next year...
