New to Zihuatanejo question? (reply)

There is very good snorkeling at Las Gatas . Go as early as possible to any location but a fit person with proper footwear can walk to Las Gatas as early as they choose and like a ski hill , get "first tracks" in before anyone else is there . The fish have been fed over time which is COMPLETELY WRONG but still the fish swarm you . Thousands of small fry and hundreds of good sized damselfish in many stages and colours . There are scrawled filefish , butterflyfish , and many good sized garfish or something similar . There are hundreds of mini eco systems at each rock pile with moray eels, anemones, urchins, shellfish, crustaceans and little pods of coral of many types for micro snorkeling and plenty schools of larger fish hunting and hunted.

I believe the shoreline between Las Gatas and La Ropa is just as good and the snorkeling at the far north end of La Ropa by the big rocks is also very good . Water clarity , especially in and around rainy season can vary but the diversity of sea life is as good as anywhere . All completely free .

The Picante Sail & Snorkel Cruise takes you out around the lighthouse to a small cove with a beach (¿Playa Manzanillo?) where you can snorkel from the boat. I saw lots of fish, and even an octopus there. Then you can go on the spinnaker swing when the boat returns to the bay -that's lots of fun! I've read other posters' accounts of having gone to this same place via hiring a panga for half a day or so, too.
