I still need one.

If you want to be within easy walking distance of La Zona Rosa but not have to pay La Zona Rosa prices then I highly recommend the Hotel María Cristina, located right next door to the former home of former president Venustiano Carranza. Rooms are comfy, service is top notch and they have a terrific restaurant with a particularly delicious breakfast.

If you want to be near the Zócalo and enjoy the Centro Histórico then the Hotel Gillow would be my recommendation. Spacious comfortable rooms, and if you get one on the top floor you can get a huge terrace. Also has an excellent restaurant. Just be patient waiting for the hot water, it will come.

Both places are convenient to the Metro (subway) and lots of excellent restaurants and places worth seeing.

Hope this helps.

What hotel? (reply)

We stayed a night at the Ritz just four blocks down the andador from the Zocolo. When we were there, about ten days ago, nothing was happening at the Zocolo, so it was a bit disappointing. We were just using it as a stopover on our way to Chiapas and did not give ourselves enough time to explore. The Hotel was classic, old and charming. It was disturbing to see all the American chain restaurants on the andador.

Mexico City (reply)

I sit in a hotel room in the Zona Rosa section of Cd. Mexico as I write this. After 13 visits to Zihua I finally took up and visited this awesome city that hasn't seen me since 1968. I spent the last 2 days touring - the pyramids and the Guadalupe Basilica...you can imagine what a sight that was this week! - and walking the historic district and zocolo. By far exceeded expectations. Flying was the only way to go for me. Not at all as cheap as mentioned, but reasonable.
I booked a package thru Salvatore at Viajes America downtown. Highly recommend!!

Road from Morelia (reply)

Good to hear, we also made the trip after Dia de los Muertos
and we avoided all the potholes but one.
We dented the rental car in the lower front part and part of
the grill almost came off. We were able to repair both issues
before returning it, but this shouldn't happen in a toll road.

Road from Morelia (reply)

They appear to be fixing the holes now. There are short sections being re-surfaced. Our ride was very smooth- good road conditions- and very minor delays at the sections being repaired. The pot hole fillings are frequent after the rainy season each year.

Mexico City (reply)

Just drove there and back from here in Zihua, over the past 3 days. It was really cold overnight...down to 5....and only around 15 during the day...could be just a cold snap. Just to report on the road situation: we went there on the route towards Acapulco and had no issues other than huge traffic jam and construction near Cuernavaca which added 1 1/2 hours to our drive. We returned through Morelia. Two of the casettas (toll booths) were occupied by normalistas, and although I don't support their school, nor their "methods of fundraising", I have to say that they were polite (while they accepted our money which was the normal toll fee, which at this time has been reduced by 50% gracias al presidente) and at one booth I even had a rather pleasant discussion (non-political) with several of them. It was a pleasant drive home- also with some construction, but no resulting traffic jams, and of course that wonderful scenery never ceases to provide a lot of wonder and enjoyment.
