Makes me sad too. BTW I was referring to Playa Madera and not La Ropa, but when I went to La Ropa, we always stopped and talked to people walking their dogs. This whole dog thing is a damn shame.

Unfortunately (reply)

Unless things change between now and March, I'm afraid you are going to be sadly surprised.
For the last 5 years, we have started our days by paddling, the walking our dogs the length of La Ropa and back, then swimming with them.
Not this year. And sadly, there aren't any other dogs out there when we have our paddle. We/our dogs had friends, and people we had spoken to for years. No more. After 6 weeks here, we finally saw one, Lennie the pit bull, on a leash, running with his guy. All the others are not on the beach.
Are we trying to work within the system to get things changed? Sure, but we are part timers, 4 months a year, non citizens, and are going to winter elsewhere, unfortunately, after this year.

dogs on Madera (reply)

Boxers, I urge you to do what Rob suggests. When we come to Hotel Aura del Mar in March every year, my favorite way to start the day is sitting in our tub on the deck with my sweetie, with a cup of fabulous strong coffee and watch the action on the beach! There are people and kids with their dogs, running and playing in the water, throwing sticks and having a great time. most people arrive with their dog on a leash, let them go, have a great time, clean up after them, leash them up and leave. I have two wonderful dogs that I don't bring to Zihua, but if I see any of these people trying to intimidate people with their dogs or restaurant owners who let people with dogs in, I will be all over them like a cheap suit!

La Ropa (reply)

From my experience on La Ropa, if the doggie cops are there they will harass you. Best advice is to say "No hablo Espanol." smile, and politely ignore them. That seems to work for some folks. Also, they will not bother if you take the back road in to sit in a restaurant with your dog. Just don't take the dog out of the restaurant onto the beach.
We had a "service dog permit" which has now expired, and when we went to Ayuntamiento to see about getting it renewed, there was a padlock on the gate and no instructions as to where we might find any public officials. Now wondering how we are supposed to pay our property tax!

dogs on Madera (reply)

When asked to leave today,I did not, stay at the resturant. One hour later three men showed up, two on beach and one to owner of restaurant.
Owner was told his dog must be sent home and he must tell me to leave. If not they would make much trouble for him. He was very sorry but could do nothing. That my dogs were very well behaved but had no choice. I do have choice, Zihua has gone nuts. People shot all over town, armed robbery on beach, local dogs use sidewalk for toilet amd owners watch-no pick up. Sewage dumped in bay and my dogs are problem? My monthly $$$ spent here is not much but if 100 of us move out, it will add up. O the tourest busness is just bumming. Am I THE ONLY ONE THAT FEELS LIKE THIS???

There is no local support for this bad policy by our city goverment. Most folks are totally unaware of it. I guess I'll have to take some time and effort to make sure that changes. If more folks were aware that this bad policy is chasing tourists away from Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa the government would be unable to explain itself or justify it. They still have some folks believing that Ixtapa's "playa certificada" means something positive. Most folks are totally unaware that is has cost us hundreds if not thousands of tourists.

I urge you to post all the details here of this incident as well as the time of day when this occurred and the name of the restaurant. I also urge you to continue ignoring this stupid policy, and I really wish someone had captured the incident on video. Just one video of a tourist being harassed or a restaurant owner being threatened over this matter would be all we need to make sure this stupid policy gets the bad publicity it deserves. There is no excuse for our city government insisting on this rule that has almost no support from the local folks in the tourist industry. Local hotel and restaurant operators are overwhelmingly against this policy, and we were apparently and very disappointingly misled into believing it would be rescinded.

Leashed up with bags, do you think we'll be harassed, or ignored? The girls really want to sit behind our beach chairs in the afternoon, but we don't want any hassles at all.

dogs on Madera (reply)

This is really disturbing me. One of the reasons we picked Zihua As a place to spend 3 months was because of its dog Friendliness. I talked to lots of people who were there with their dogs last March. I did my research. This is really making me re-think and question our decision. We have invited family and friends to spend a little time with us so we could share Zihua with them.

Feeling sad and frustrated.
