Mo' Z On Down History Lane

The elementary school my wife attended is also the oldest school in Zihuatanejo, Escuela Primaria Vicente Guerrero, which opened its doors to its first students in 1943. The school was built by the federal government under Gen. Lázaro Cárdenas, who was well loved here. The school came with three other major projects, all part of a package by the Cárdenas government: the first local airport (located near where Materiales Sotelo now has their construction supplies business), potable water from the stream at El Calechoso, and the lighthouse at Punta Garrobo.

While I'm sure the Secretaría de Educación could care less about it today, a lot of locals would like to see the old original part of the school preserved as a landmark. Me too. The street in front of it used to be the school's recreation area with a volleyball court. My wife and her classmates became state volleyball champions on that court.
