You guys are exactly right on this. Not having local insurance in the event of an accident can be a real nightmare. The Mexican system mostly requires payment for damages right then and there. You don't get to go home and then get a bill later. Also, liability disputes in local courts are notoriously contentious and slow to be resolved. Gringo visitors are at a huge disadvantage.

Have you ever been in an accident in Mexico using a credit card as auto insurance coverage? Setting aside all the limitations on an auto damage claim against a credit card - the real problem is that the rental company and local law enforcement do not accept that as payment for the damage. You are required to pay all costs up front including estimated damage to the car and "loss of income" while the car is being repaired. Then you attempt to recover those costs later from the credit card company. Don't even think about what happens if someone in another vehicle is injured in this accident. I do rent cars in Mexico, I have been involved in an accident, and driving without local insurance coverage is not a risk I am prepared to take.

I have used Dollar for the last 5 or so trips with no issues. I always walk with the agent and video/photo the car condition before I leave the lot.

I used to use my credit card insurance, but in recent years decided it was worth it to just get the coverage from the rental company. I didn't think the money was worth ruining a vacation if I had to waste days and confusion trying to settle an accident.

One reason not use your cc for insurance is the fact you will most likely be responsible for the rental car daily rate for each day it is out of service if the vehicle is damaged

Just remember the numerous caveats on the board in the past about what local authorities will recognize as "insurance" if you get in an accident. I.E. local police not understanding your card coverage, and you not being able to leave the country until all parties are satisfied...just sayin'

I had the exact opposite experience with Europcar; but had a very similar experience with Dollar.

Last April I rented from Dollar for one week; went out to Troncones for part of the time and then had plans to go to Patzcuaro. The car was leaking coolant and if I was just staying in Troncones I wouldn't have minded, there was a hose in the parking lot where I was staying but I didn't want to get stranded on the way or in Patzcuaro. I called Dollar up and they brought me a replacement out to Troncones. My credit card also covered the CDW and had no issues will Dollar.

I rented in January from Europcar at the airport and had a great and honest experience. Before arriving I booked and prepaid for a compact car at a bargain rate of $57 a week or $90 for 11 days. I intended to use my credit card for CDW insurance and brought proof of credit card coverage in Mexico. The agent accepted it, without a hassle. Other years, renting with other carriers, always ended up in a heated argument and a struggle. This year our experience was excellent, I highly recommend Europcar!!!

Anyone have a suggestion of best/worst rental car companies in Zih.

I'd like to get the car downtown, rather than at the airport, or get it delivered to our hotel on la Ropa.

Thanks for any feedback.
