We loved Las Golondrinas when there, but it has been several years, so not sure about it now. It was close enough to walk to the downtown area.

As I've mentioned before, a great place to stay in Oaxaca is Casa Colonial, a charming and secure B&B within easy walking distance to the zocalo. Jane Robison, the owner and an old friend of mine from San Francisco, has had the place for many years and is extremely knowledgeable of the area. She is available as a tour guide. The area is of particular interest to lovers of arts and crafts; the selection of beautiful items is mind blowing.

Unfortunately you will need to change planes in DF or Toluca to go to/from.

I strongly recommend at least one visit to Oaxaca. There are many small comfortable and clean hotels near the zocalo. The food is excellent!!!!

Speaking of the zocalo, some teachers and followers of whatever movement have set up a tent city which impacts the views across the square and gretaly impacts the legitimate businesses there.

El Rey de Matalan Anejo, in my opinion is the absolute best mezcal in the area. It has a good old stony buzz affect to it.

Oaxaca

Someone earlier asked about the options from Z to Lax.

We visited Oax this past Dia de los Muertos and had a blast.

Excellent food, mezcal and shrooms.

Also visited Don Ino, a seasonal artisan in Z, at his home in el Valle del Teotitian (sp?). Don Jose was such a host.

Hope to return to Oax for a "trip" to el bosque for their Festival de Hongas.
