It may be cheaper than off but it's unlikely it works as well, especially if it's off with an higher content in Deet. As much as Deet is not a very healthy product and you don't want to overuse it, nothing is as efficient against moskitoes that you can spray on yourself. Yes there are natural and other products that works, but not as good as a high Deet concentration product. Where I live now and where I have traveled over the years is full of moskitoes and I have tried litterally every product available, every home made but nothing has been as efficient as Deet. Where I live is actually a testing ground for several products against moskitoes.

And it makes sense you will find moskitoes under tables as it would be away from the sun and possibly a slightly higher humidity content under a table, especially if covered by a nap.

The label on H24 says "Dietal toluamida 20%." I've yet to meet a mosquito that buzzed: "Hah! Only 20%? No problemo."

Actually, one of the difficulties dealing with Mexican mosquitoes is that they're so tiny, you can't hear them. REAL mosquitoes of the, say, Winnipeg variety....the size of small hummingbirds.....can be heard 10 meters away.

My problem, other than those occasions when I'm under the table, are the jejenes/sandfleas/zancudos/noseeums....whatever they are.... that occupy a narrow band of territory of the beach at Playa Larga, between the restaurants and the shore. They're the closest thing I've seen to our voracious Canadian black flies - and H24 works just fine for me.

Walmart's Great Value 100 ml pump spray, at $5, says "Guarantee: DEET plus related active toluamides.....30%." It works well too, at half the cost of over-priced OFF.

We have been coming down every May for the last several years and will be again in two weeks. I would really like to avoid this affliction. We already have a bottle of Off repellant down there. Any other suggestions to keep those buggers away while we spend our evening hours at some of our favorite outdoor spots?

Try "H24", an "Hecho en Mexico" repelente sold in a 170g aerosol can with an orange top, at Comercial Mexicana, for around 47 pesos. Works fine and much cheaper than OFF. I used to use Autan, (lotion, cream or spray) but they didn't have it very often this past winter at either Bodega Aurrera or Comercial Mexicana.

Anyone else ever noticed that mosquitoes seem to live underneath tables at many Zihua restaurants?

The Moskito Magnet is very effective and I know a few people here that owns them and love them, especially the larger unit. I live in a part of Canada where lots of moskitoes are found in the summer and if you own a large part of land around your property, these are great to have to fight moskitoes as even if we have fogging in our city, if you have land further away from the street, it may not be enough and the Magnet comes handy. Their drawback is they seem to have a large amount of them found to be defective in their early launch so I hope the newer models are better...

Anything with DET, 23 percent is best. I think y9u can buy the spray cans at the box stores there but take a few bottles of the rub on stuff just in case. I have tried putting the spray cans in checked luggage but sometimes it doesn't make it thru TSA. I have treated clothing with permetherin and it seems to help.

I'm going to try to get ThermaCell repellant devices thru TSA but don't hold much hope as there are some little tiny butane cartridges.

I am the World's Greatest Mosquito magnet and stay in La Barra.

Has anyone ever tried the MOsquito Magnet: They are bulky and expensive and are designed for long term usuage.

La Fumigación (reply)

Last night they sprayed along the La Noria/Almacen road and in La Noria. They sprayed here in La Noria again this morning. Yay!

Yes, the public clamor apparently became too much. But of course FIRST they had to have a big ceremony at city hall so the políticos could get their pictures taken doing their jobs as if it were a huge favor they were doing us and we should shower them with praise for it.

Even though this new virus Chikungunya has been present in the region since late last year, this is the FIRST TIME all year that the "responsible authorities" have actually sprayed in the neighborhoods and downtown. Unfortunately it seems they are still in denial regarding its presence here since local news is reporting that only 10 cases have been confirmed locally, which I know is a bunch of crap. The problem is most folks don't bother wasting their time going to public clinics because they have no doctors or medicines yet still make you wait hours if not days just to be attended, and most locals can't afford a private doctor so it continues being underreported. But we all seem to know over a dozen people who have been affected this year, including several deaths, so I distrust the "official" count. Unfortunately, to most folks it appears that the only thing the "responsible authorities" seem to care about besides their bank account is their image.
