Agua Azul Sport Fishing (reply)

Chiquis owns the Intruza. The Aqua Azul is owned by Angel Cortez (Mecate). They are not even related, and have 100% different personalities. Mecate is laid back and easy going, and Chiquis is always wheel'n and deal'n.

We don't need two captains losing clients, when only one is the problem.

Well Ed, all I can say is El Chiquis is trying to open a business called "Agua Azul Sport Fishing". That's the business name on the concession granted by the SCT. Kind of strange that he would be allowed to use the name of a different boat.

Here's another newspaper article with more details:

They have the area roped off, 10 to 15 people sitting there making sure no other stuff goes on. I don't know for how long, but these people seem serious. They do not want anything cut down nor do they want some other structure there in the parking lot.

Water taxis were running earlier in the day. I don't
know about right now.

Lupita said she saw the city workers setting up to cut down the trees on Tuesday evening when she was there. That's how they do things when they don't want folks to be able to protest: they do it clandestinely under cover of darkness. Conniving lowlifes! "Un Gobierno inDiferente"

I'm just glad they organized themselves the next morning when they saw what was happening: workers setting up at 7AM, something almost unheard of. But then again, the workers wanted to rush to tear up the parking lot. The city government's lame explanations didn't satisfy anyone. Apparently El Chiquis and the other people had been planning this for 6 years or so. The city knew what was happening and simply tried to keep it quiet so they could accept the "fees" they were going to charge for the "permits" and "licenses", which is what bribes and payoffs are officially called these days.

Glad to hear the water taxis were running. The waves weren't so high as to justify closing the port as the Capitañía had announced he was going to do this morning.

Here's a video of a dramatic and potentially deadly mar de fondo event that took place in Acapulco on July 5, 2014. Not for the feint of heart.

One minute it's a nice calm day at the beach with tourists strolling along leisurely, the next thing you know...

Well, that's some cheeky shenanigans! Glad it got caught, but unfortunately too late for the trees. At least things didn't get too far down the road on the other developments. The situation will require some continued vigilance, for sure.

That's some big wave approaching La Boquita - I just looked at the Ixtapa webcams and the surf looks quite bouncy there, too.

Just a couple of notes from the local coconut telegraph:

For those of you who use and promote the fisherman José Alberto Hernández Gutiérrez aka "El Chiquis" and his boat "Agua Azul", you should know that he has become persona non grata with the rest of the fishermen and many of the old families of Zihuatanejo because he is one of the people responsible for yesterday's surprise at the pier: the removal of 4 trees (2 tamarindos, 1 almendra, 1 palmera) and the attempted construction of 1 of several new locales in the parking lot of the pier. He got caught apparently trying to pull a fast one, but now there is a permanent protest at the pier to assure that his new office along with a new Oxxo, a souvenir shop and several other locales never get built. He and several other folks have certainly pissed off everyone in all the fishing co-ops as well as the other residents and businesspeople who make up the fishing and pier community. He's got some unpleasant days ahead of him.

Prestadores de servicios turísticos se oponen a siete concesiones otorgadas por la federación

Also, the port is closed due to the second episode of mar de fondo in as many weeks. You can walk to Las Gatas, but it's not clear if the port captain will allow the water taxis to operate in the bay. Isla Ixtapa suffers a similar fate until the port captain lifts the closure.
