Airport Covid testing tips

My daughter went to the airport for her Covid test the day before her flight. The place was chaos yesterday. System was down and some people missed their flights because the results were not available even though they went to the airport three hours before their flight. Of course her results were not available, but she did have an email from them that they had her email address. Well, the results never arrived last night or this morning. She was extremely relieved to find her results email in her junk email folder. Obviously she didn't mark them for junk.

Moral of the story is get there really early and check your junk email file if you don't find it in your inbox.

A prior post indicated that printed paper test results were also available at the airport. Is that incorrect?

They do both. But/And it is a mess, they truly are not prepared for the volume they have. Everything is very artisanal - they take your name, and then when results are ready they input the info again on the computer. These people are lab technicians, not data entry people. They truly do their best, and it is not enough.

On our party, only 2 of the 4 got the email results - even though we provided the same email.

My daughter said they did give them to a few people, but I have no idea if that is standard practice or it may have been because the rest of the system was down yesterday.

Are they doing Covid tests every day at the airport? How long does it take for the email to hit if they can't print the results?

Not sure if they do every day, I assume they do, but maybe call the airport?

Regarding email: For the two of us that got it via email (two did not ever get them), it was just prior to boarding. The lab told the United agent we were all negative and then he was able to check us in. However: I was not on the flight manifest and had a bit of an issue going into Immigration. Global Entry did not pick me up, and I had to go to a physical agent. I showed him my paper boarding pass and he fixed it.

Anybody used the lab in Ixtapa next to the Holiday Inn. I called the Holiday Inn and they said that the don't do the test there but will come to the house and do it. I don't think they would come to Zihua, that's where we stay. The desk person at the Holiday Inn said there is a designated place that they do the tests other than home but when I called the lab my Spanish didn't get thru to the person in the lab.

I believe they do not test at the airport on Thursdays as there are no departing international flights that day. I addition, numerous people have not received an email within the time stated or even close. In fact some had to go request a printout before checking in only to receive an email the next day. But once the test is done, they have a record of the results on file in their computer, so if you're waiting around and it's been more than an hour, just go back to the both and ask for a printout.

Flying out Saturday, going to airport tomorrow for test and will post experience.

FYI - may help to check flightstats.com or a similar site to see the quantity/times of departing international flights in the 3 day window before departure and try to find a good day/time to go get the test when volume may be low.

3 departing international flights on Saturday so higher volume. Only 1 departing on Friday so less volume. Sure, folks like me will go Friday when flying Saturday however should still be better than doing day of.

Excuse me, but each week changes. I can tell you for a fact that February 4th, which was a Thursday, there were no international flights out of Zihua, which is typical. That is why people need to check before they go, or in your case, speak before they know what the hell they are talking about.

The airport testing days and times have been posted and Thursdays were not included for a reason. Just because United had a one time change in there usual schedule which does not normally include Thursdays, does not make my statement incorrect. Since I am a regular United customer, unlike your second hand knowledge, I know of what I speak, "first hand". Your apology is accepted.

I think we can all do without the rudeness and berating. If you want to help folks, fine, but if it's not altruistic then what's the point? Everyone is welcome here until I have to step in the middle of the fray. No one is perfect, and we all need to be more tolerant of each other's shortcomings.

Arrived at airport Friday about 1:15 to take test for Saturday flight. Two folks ahead in line. Paperwork, payment test complete within about 25 min. Was advised that I would get the email results later that day but not to expect them till late evening. Received email to confirm email address about 8:40 and received results email about 9:10.

So not the 30 min as advertised however I took a day early, the process was quick and efficient and I have no complaints (but then again I never do in Z expect having to leave!)

So I was one of the folks who missed the 4:20 Alaska to LAX flight due to the fiasco at the airport...here's what happened:

My husband and I arrived by 1PM to give it plenty of time. There were only a few folks in front of us at that time, but the testing kiosk internet was down so they couldn't input your application/take payment. You had to call in to the corporate call center to apply/give credit card info. If you mainly speak English (as we do--we're working on it but our visits/opportunities to study are few and far between) this was very difficult--we got a customer service rep that spoke some English but that didn't help us ultimately (she still apparently misspelled my name). They say at the end of the call they will send you an email with your confirmation number to take to the testing kiosk within "minutes." Ours didn't come for an hour and a half (I noticed at that time it got forwarded from a first try where they had misspelled my email).

(Other folks couldn't get this far--their phones didn't work for calling. Those folks actually ended up in a better situation because one of the kiosk reps would call for them on their own phones and communicate their application and payment info to the call center--I think those folks made the flight...)

In the meantime (long before I got the promised confirmation email) I got notification on my phone from my credit card that the payment had gone through and because it had been almost an hour just to get to this point I showed it to the kiosk reps who were then able to find our application "in the system" (how that's different than/possible with the internet being down I don't know) so we got our tests done about 2:00PM, with the promise that the guaranteed in 1/2 hour results would be available (printed) by 3PM...(see what I did there? LOL).

By 3PM our names had not been called and it was chaos and it seemed the squeaky wheels were getting more results so we started going up to the kiosk every 5 or so minutes asking for our results...to no avail. BTW, you can't check luggage or get your boarding pass until you can show proof of these results. So about 3:45 or so we were finally getting nervous and my husband was holding a spot in line to check luggage while I was standing right at the kiosk window to keep them looking for our results...'cause apparently the system had crashed and they couldn't find folks' applications much less their results (or the two couldn't be tied together because of typos or some such). Sometime after 4PM Alaska was warning us of gate closing and about a half dozen of us were freaking out and really putting those poor kiosk folks though the wringer. About 4:20ish--after we had been told it was too late, gates were closed--they called out my husband's name and handed me his certificate and Alaska rep told him he could make it and I told him to go! He was the last to make it on board.

Meanwhile, several of us were just stunned but still waiting for our results while rebooking our flights. The three kiosk chemists (who were having a no good very bad day too) convinced several folks that they would get their results by email or could pick them up at the kiosk on Friday when they returned for their flight. I was the last hold out--despite several folks kindly offering to share found accomodations with them (since I was the only solo one), I was able to contact our àirbnb host and get the okay to return for 2 nights, so I stayed and kept insisting I wouldn't leave until I had printed results in hand (not going through that again). One of the chemists, Abril, promised me that she would not leave work until she had it and also told me she would drive me to my La Madera airbnb at that time...so I was at the airport until after 8PM last night at which time she finally got the (negative) results from the lab (my name being misspelled was apparently the straw that broke the camel's back among everything else that was going down). FYI, there is NO one at the airport that time but a few workmen and security guards by the way so I wouldn't advise hanging around there that late unless you have a lovely young stressed out exhausted chemist offering to drive you home...and by the way, since she now probably has my name engraved behind her eyes, please, anyone who reads this and goes to that kiosk, tell Abril that she is Colleen Malone's hero.

So there you go. Take from this what you will. I have enjoyed one more day of hammock-time and am trying to decide where to eat my last desayuno in Zihua tomorrow AM...who gets your best molletes vote (walking distance from La Madera)?

There are doctors in town that will come to your house or condo 1,2 or 3 days before you fly and do the test for you. Get with your property manager and have them arrange the visit. Geeze Wizzzz. You should never travel international and schedule your time so tight that there is no room for screwups. This is not a mexico thing, this is part of life. Live life and go with it.

Smoke and Mirrors US not serious about results

This is related but slightly off topic. We received our test at our home in Ixtapa-one day before our flight negative result so all good and reassuring knowing we would have no hiccups at the airport. Sounds good so far, BUT when we checked in for our United AIrlines flight through Mexico City to the US, we simply had to check the little box that said we had a negative result. The honor system if you will. Also, customs checks at O’Hare were non existent. The US is not serious about this requirement in my opinion. Why have a regulation you don’t intend to enforce or even have a meaningful mechanism to enforce? The US government is paying lip service to the Pandemic. A real joke to be honest. Fortunately cases, hospitalizations, and finally deaths are cratering all across the US. Hard to tell exactly why but it’s good news for sure.

Hola. Remember that there are several kinds of tests that are used for Covid-19 testing. The viral test is all that is required to enter the USA. It is a quick test and is fairly inexpensive. Canadians require a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) molecular test. It is a more involved test and requires more time to get the results. It is also much more expensive. That may be why there are different prices being quoted. When asking for a price quote make sure you are getting the required test.

Yes but they are $2300 per test. Airport teating is open from 0o30 to 1700 7 days per week, per Alaska Airlines and the people at the testing station. Update, The results from the Airport test were NEVER Emailed as promised. Due to traveling with children 5 and 3, it was worth ANOTHER trip to the airport to check on the results a day before the flight. Arrived at the Covid testing station at the airport, showed them our receipt and with in 1 minute we had the 4 results. So if you think that going to the airport ahead of time to get your test and have the results emailed to you is a good idea? It is 1/2 a good idea.

Best idea is to have ample time to book a home visit, we could not get a reservation due to the family only being here 1 week.

The system works, just not as advertised.

Canadians need a PCR test, US folks need the Antigen test, I doubt they are charging you that much for an antigen test

Maybe but I was in no position to debate with them on the phone or email. And there is no way I was going to go there in Person knowing that I was quoted such a high price. They did reply when I asked," How come so expensive as I we need is the test required by the USA not Canada" Their reply was, " Our test is better and has to go to Mexico City for processing".

That answer convinced me to take the family to the airport.

The place you mentioned next to Holiday Inn for testing, do you have a name or phone number for them?

Thank you,

Daniel

AZUMED. It is in Robs listing of test places. However, they will only come to your place of residence and you need a reservation, 1 week in advance. That is what I did and it worked.
