Whales and Octopus

I thought the whales were gone, because we hadn't seen them in the past two weeks, but they put on a show around 5 p.m. this afternoon at the mouth of the bay! We also went snorkeling at Las Gatas, where I saw the biggest octopus I've ever seen while snorkeling - with his legs and everything, he was as big as my head, and I think I scared him. When I looked down he was already booking it, then slid under a rock and put his arms around him, tentacles out, while he changed color from a reddish brown to mottled yellow/beige/brown colors - just like the rock he was under! SO cool!

That IS cool! You need one of those wearable underwater cameras so that we can post what you see to try to save Playa Manzanillo. :-)

Someday (for the camera) - this was at Las Gatas - I've seen lots of octupus (little ones) at Manzanilla, but this is only the second time I've seen one at Las Gatas, and the biggest by far!

The fact you've seen them at Playa Manzanillo is one more reason why it should be designated as an Área Natural Protegida.

A damn shame people still eat octopus!

Thanks Helene for the recommendation of "My Octopus Teacher". I just finished watching it. Fascinating! Amazing cinematography!

The main character is an ironman...I cannot imagine free diving in such cold water every day for nearly a year!

Correction: The main character is the octopus. ;-)

But yeah, I hear dat. Lots of us who live here in Zihuatanejo won't swim in the water now because we consider it too cold. We'll wait for May when the water warms up.

Haha! You got me Rob! I hesitated when I typed it. Of course the octopus is the main character. I should have said the main HUMAN character.

I grew up swimming in 55 degree water...could not do it any longer after the age of about 18. And for my SCUBA diving I wore a 3/8 inch wetsuit....and I still got cold.
