Safer to travel from Oaxaca to Zihua or Puerto Escondido

Another question...people with no Spanish language ability, 3 couples, in their thirties, want to travel by van from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido. Your response has been that it's safe. In my experience, Zihua and Puerta Vallarta are much more interesting. These people don't surf, so I wondered why they chose Escondido. But I also wonder how safe it would be for them to travel to Zihua or Puerto Vallarta.. appreciate your comments. I'm the mom so they probably won't listen to me anyway, although I'd been in those situations 20 years ago. Gracias

We have been traveling in Mexico for the last 40 years and have way more road miles in Mexico than in the US, in tents and RV's. Until we found Zihuatanejo, Puerto Escondito was our favorite spot. It's hot, like here, it's smaller than here, it has amazing beaches, and used to have a great clothing optional beach. It's another great place to visit. It has more European visitors than we have here, so a different vibe.
Mom, get over it. We finally got to the point, very early on that we didn't tell one of our families that we were on the road in Mexico because they freaked out. If you raised your kids well, relax and revel in the fact that they are exploring other countries, cultures and having adventures!!!
Us? We left the US and moved here permanently 4 years ago. Best decision we ever made, and our families, if living would have cheered. Finally!

Travelling dusty highways late at night can get you in trouble...as we saw with those 2 Aussie surfers south of Mazatlan a few years ago.

Traveling at night in Mexico is always discouraged for several reasons.

I have a relative who is a now-retired RCMP officer. He investigated major crimes, including murder. When his 20-something kids were traveling the world, I asked him whether he worried about them getting killed. Here’s how he responded to me.
“People like you and me and my kids don’t get killed by violence. The people who are getting killed by violence are people who are involved with violence. Low-lifes killing low-lifes.
“Ordinary people’ die from car accidents or going to work or disease or old age. Stay away from the bad guys and they won’t be interested in killing you.
“If politicians wanted to save money and save lives, they would take money away from major crimes and divert it to community policing and public safety, with an emphasis on traffic.”
When I started typing this message, I had forgotten the end of his comments 20+ years ago. When I read the words of that cop now, they sound a lot like “defund the police”.

Forgive the question, but if no one out of the six adults on the trip can speak a lick of Spanish, why are they traveling through Mexico?

I didn't speak a lick of Thai. But that did not stop me from touring Thailand. I didn't speak or write Mandarin Chinese when I went to Taiwan either.
Of course I could list other examples. What is your point?

Differing views on travel, I guess. If I'm not conversant in the language spoken in a country, as a guest I try to learn at least a few phrases out of respect.

Would sincerely doubt it, but check the forums, like you do here, and use MegaNoticias for that area.

Are they buying a van to do this trip or do they already own it ? We took a flight to the coast from Oaxaca on a 14 Seater a year ago January, 45 minutes. Also busses are very comfortable and way less expensive but 7 hours on twisty roads at night didnt appeal to us as we only had 5 days before returning to Oaxaca and then on to Puebla.
