Guerrero's health authorities currently register 284 active cases of Covid-19 in Zihuatanejo, 13 in La Unión, 48 in Petatlán, 48 in Técpan, 947 in Acapulco, and 2,800 for the entire state. So much for my falling numbers comment yesterday. Please remember that you're expected to wear a facemask here when indoors in stores and offices as well as when travelling by public transportation (taxi, bus, plane).

We had a little deluge this morning, a good tropical rain, thankfully short-lived. Much of downtown flooded, and our street was just about to flood when the rain let up. I've seen it rain like this for days and even weeks on end. An atypical rain for the middle of July en plena Canícula. Usually we get a big storm at the beginning of the month then nothing until after La Canícula. I loved every bit of it except for the backflow of drainage and the flooding that was a problem for others. It certainly brought down the temps. The electricity went out shortly after the rain started coming down hard, but about an hour later it was back on. Cinco de Mayo was one of the most flooded parts of town, as usual. Garbage washed up on all the beaches, and the tourists at Las Gatas were not happy. Probably best not to swim for a couple of days until cleaner water circulates back into the bay. It's muddy and probably full of fecal matter from the hillsides and other clandestine open bathrooms right now. Sad to see the huge tree that fell down by the Oxxo in La Ropa. I hope no one suffered any damage.

One of the jewels on Playa La Ropa besides the beach itself is Bungalows Vepao, an amazing little place with all kinds of nice little comforts.

Earlier this week before the rain the water looked very inviting.

What tree by the OXXO? We lost the one across the street from the OXXO and one behind it, both parotas, during Rick.

No idea where that is. Near Leti's house?

Between Las Adelitas ad the right turn down to the south end of La Ropa.

Amazing photo! We just walked over there and all that is left is a tiny bit of the trunk, nothing else. Just as amazing is that we never heard chainsaws and there is no debris of any kind left on the site.

And it was interesting to watch the wood go away. It appeared that there was about a 5 day delay, maybe for permits or bidding? Then, in came a crew that took several days to slab and take their time doing the cuts on the tree. As much as we miss the tree, it was nice to see that it wasn't just hacked down and hauled off.

Compare that to the recent removal last week of a majestic, 70+ year old, 70+ foot tall Torrey Pine in an older San Diego neighborhood. Virtually of the tree was put through the chipper. I was shaking my head thinking, "If this were Mexico, that tree would have been turned into a tremendous amount of furniture and art work."

When I was going through the woodworking program at Palomar, the school was very active in urban forestry. One of the first-year requirements is to work for a couple days in the mill. The school has its own sawmill and drying kilns. They receive lumber from all around the region usually the form of trees downed after storms or during construction projects.

I'm gonna guess, if that tree was chipped, it may have been diseased, or have too much internal stress to make it viable for making stuff.

I must bow to your expert opinion. After the workers left, there two round pieces that looked pretty darned good to this layman. They must have been about 7 feet in diameter. They are now gone so maybe they were the only parts that were salvageable. Hopefully, they will become two beautiful tables!

I stayed there twice, once on my last visit here as a tourist. I love the place, you can sit by the ocean without any concerns. Clean etc. I put my nephew up there last December and he loved it too. The poolside restaurant is quite good. The manager - Luis? - is a very nice man. You cannot beat this place for the price and location.
