Hello-
We are heading down for a month with our tiny dog and I have read all of the postings on here about the Blue Flag beaches not allowing dogs. We are staying very near the Thompson Hotel, and I see that dogs may be allowed just PAST the Thompson Hotel? Can a local help me understand where the cut-off points are for the Blue Flag beach zone? I am so bummed about this no dogs allowed rule.
Gracias in advance!
Carrie

They will harass you along the entire beach, but what they're doing violates federal law. In the Zona Federal you can walk with your dog or ride a horse down the beach if you want (taking care not to damage turtle nests, of course). The municipal government does not have jurisdiction to arrest or fine you in the Zona Federal and they certainly can't deport you, only the federal government has jurisdiction if you violate a federal law. Walking on the beach with your dog is no violation of federal law, only a POLICY of the local government. They cannot prevent you from accessing the beach, either.
I keep hoping someone will send me a video of them being harassed by the Guardianas de la Playa or whatever they call themselves. I'd love to put an end to this nonsense instead of letting the less than a dozen people in favor of this get away with ruining the beach for so many people and hurting our tourism. It's basically only 2 restaurant owners promoting this stupid policy at La Ropa.

Oh man. I am so bummed that the entire beach is off limits to dogs. I wouldn’t have booked this trip had I known this earlier!!! Thanks so much for the information. While it may not be legal for the local officials to enforce the rules- as a visitor with limited Spanish skills I wouldn’t have the ability to argue with them.

Why not post the restaurants' names so that dog lovers can take their business elsewhere?

I would agree. We've never eaten there. Our preference is Otilia's on Las Gatas.

Ever since we heard that La Perla restaurant was the main instigator of banning our little Westies from walking with us on Playa la Ropa, we decided to never again go to the restaurant. And, we NEVER EVER recommend it.

It's a place that has guacamayas and that has been known for feeding the cocodrilos in the lagoon, both of which I find somewhat hypocritical if not unethical, although they claim to be trying to save the guacamayas: Restaurante Arena.
Oh Im sorry to hear that. I like it there. Thank you for the information. I will avoid going there.

I consider these people my friends, same as Francisco and his family. We may have our differences, but we don't have to agree on everything. I wish them no ill will and I don't wish to drive away any of their business. Their families and mine have been friends for most of my life. I'm happy to debate our differing ideas in public, but I don't consider them bad people just because they're against people having their dogs on La Ropa.

Hola
Many years ago, maybe 8-10, before this blue beach bs, my dog would like to go for strolls on La Ropa. He loved to lie on the beach waterline and would love it when the waves came and washed him into the bay. One day we walked up to La Perla for a drink. The mutt layed peacefully under the table on the beach. The owner Fransico saw the dog and had a hissy fit. Yelled and screamed at us for bringing a dog into his bar. We left. Even though the mutt has passed on, buried overlooking Playa Larga, we have never been back to La Perla and will never be there again.

Rob, I disagree with you on this. We do not spend $ on a business whose policies we disagree with. It took us many, many years to earn this money.

I think there needs to be a separate conversation on allowing a dog on La Ropa vs. allowing a dog at a beach side restaurant on La Ropa.
It's great to see dogs playing on the beach but I surely don't want a roaming around my table when I am eating. And I am a dog owner.

I'm not a dog owner but would not object to a dog sitting with its owners in the sand at an outdoor beach restaurant. Roaming amongst the other tables and perhaps causing issues with other dogs would be a problem however. It's possible these restaurant owners have had such experiences. It seems EVERY dog owner thinks their dog is the best dog ever and would never cause a problem and doesn't need to be leashed, etc.
Recently in my neighborhood an owner of an unleashed German shepherd claimed "if the other dogs would stop running away, my dog would stop chasing them". Seriously.

Think back to the years when the beaches were aplenty with Callejeros…and few Beach Walkers would be preparedto pick up the Dumps…????…and the dogs would be begging for food among the restaurants.
And…a dog on a leash with responsible owner should certainly be allowed during hours when the beach is not well attended by adults-Families. My cavaet. ????

I agree that they are different issues. A business has the right to not allow dogs (other than service animals) and we have the right to not eat at those restaurants. Working actively to have dogs banned from a public beach where family visits and exercise are now off limits removes choice. We live on a beach where dogs are allowed on 3/4 of the beach and 1/4 is only for people. It works out perfectly for everyone because there is choice.

You made a good point, and I appreciate you pointing out the sanitary and hygienic issue that many pet owners apparently don't consider, and/or conveniently overlook.
On a recent a.m. local Z talk show, in a discussion about trash on the streets, a caller called the public streets his "segunda casa", or second home, and of course was opposed to whatever trash it was they were discussing, to be on the streets.
I agree with the caller in calling the public walkways our "segunda casa ".
To coincide with that concept, I just don't appreciate what thousands of people do each day with their animals all over town & elsewhere, doing their "business" in my segunda casa, (even if they pick up the mess). Sorry, but that just doesn't appeal to me at all.
Like it or not, THAT is I.M.H.O., which I'm entitled to, as is anyone else who opposes it, and to conclude:
That's my "pet peeve" (PUN intended)

Re: "It seems EVERY dog owner thinks their dog is the best dog ever and would never cause a problem and doesn't need to be leashed, etc."
Good observation...I've noticed that, definitely, so it seems.
as if: ...my dog's S- - t doesn't stink.
At any rate, always a controversial topic with endless bickering.
The point here is to make the dog owners aware that all folks aren't comfortable with the situation as I discussed, with the dog S--T and urine all over the place, and to please do their best & take that into account. Muchas Gracias

I agree with you 100%. However, you have to be careful expressing this opinion. Some dog owners are, shall we say, exceedingly zealous and vocal in their love of their animals. "How dare you say that?! They are our children!" To which I want to respond, "Well, when will they be potty-trained, eh?" I have learned to just keep my mouth shut and carefully watch where I walk.
That's my "pet peeve" (PUN intended)
Well done!
