Waiters at resorts scam?

This is a very weird question and post, but it’s an experience I had nonetheless at a resort in Zihua. When I stayed for a week at a resort in Z in June, two waiters within the course of my week there handed me private written notes with their phone numbers. One was more polite than the other and asked to accompany me on a walk to las Gatas which I did. It was great and innocent. I will spare you the details of the texting after that but essentially I was wondering if this is a trend/scam. Asking American women to “hang out” and pretending to like us. Then asking for money???? etc etc. I don’t want to sound mean but I’ve read a lot and am well educated. Please advise is this normal scamming stuff?. Thank you so much! Have a great day!

I don't know if it's a scam if no deception occurred.

Not sure I’d call it a scam, but it would seem that the purpose is to hit you up for money. How often have guys hit on you at home and then asked for $$.

That’s a good point too, but comparing people from two different countries is a tricky one. Thanks for your reply .

Perhaps we should grab a drink sometime. I’d love to tell you about my refrigerator reapairman’s wife’s third cousin who has a roommate whose next door neighbor’s father-in-law is a Nigerian Prince who wants to give me 10 million dollars. If only I could find someone to lend me $5000 to pay the bank transfer fees. You wouldn’t happen to know anyone, would you?

Yes, lots of romantic words and sob stories, then the money ask. Men do not ask for money ever - this is a first. Seems it would be humiliating for them; not very manly.

I would say the content of the texting after should tell you exactly what it was about which only you know.
Other than that your post seems a little 'off'.

WTF - A little 'off'? As a female I can relate to Burgundy940's question, after she was approached by a male, for whatever reason. She did not instigate the conversation. The male did. This situation is not isolated to Mexico and happens often. She was asking a poignant question and your response was harsh.
Perhaps the question of "being a little 'off' might be better directed towards the male.

To the person who defended me - you are so sweet. Thank you. It was a situation in which two males pretended to be enamored with us and eventually asked for sex and then money after a total sob story (over a few weeks). We gave neither, but just curios if this is a regular "system" there in Zihua. Their steps were textbook. I think it is a little different when a man asks a woman for money. If those men are hitting up 10 women a month, they would be doing well financially. It just all seems like a manipulative way to live. Better to make a lifelong friend first and then maybe get regular honest support. I don't know. I am learning.

I'd have to assume they either wanted.......
A) money
B) sex
C) friendship
D) all of the above
It's your call as to pick which of the above you'd care to relinquish and "donate".

I wouldn't call it a scam when they are upfront about the money, just some enterprising men looking to show you a good time for a nice dinner and drinks? Many Canadian and American men here have relationship's "of convenience" with local women, maybe helping out with a bill or going out for nice dinners. I expect people will respond calling it exploitation or prostitution but I personally know many couples here in that situation where they are very happy and there is no reason why women can't as well. Btw I am happily married for 17 years to a beautiful Mexican lady.

I tend to agree with your take. It's not a scam. When I was 14 living in St. Croix and working on a tourist boat called The Buck Island Ferry taking folks snorkeling at Buck Island I met lots of tourist girls, and often they'd ask me to show them around and maybe take them dancing. Sometimes I'd have a couple of dates a night and we'd usually go to Mahogany Inn (affectionately called Agony Inn) which had a live rock'n'roll band that played a lot of Stones, Led Zeppelin and The Who where we'd dance our asses off and I'd drink cold green ones (Heinekens) or rum punches all night long (made with our local Cruzan Rum, of course), but I sure never asked for money or expected the girls to pay for anything. I think local guys are just looking for the same fun and maybe some "adventure". If it's fun then why not? Life's too short not to.
Great post. So fun remembering our youth.

No problem. The experience was great...and innocent.
Can we have a little "propina" as gratitude for our services?
