Departing Mexico City airport to USA with permanent resident

by Big Apple loves Z @, Monday, May 22, 2023, 18:47 (132 days ago)

Hello All, I always fly out of Ixtapa airport with my USA passport and Mexico Permanent Resident Card. I am required to go the immigration office at the Ixtapa airport before I board the plane and sign a ledger. So now I am departing from Mexico City airport....do I need to find the immigration office at the Mexico City airport and sign a ledger there? Thanks in advance for any info/ direction/ experience. Saludos.

I am also a Permanent Resident and am thoroughly confused about the issue. A couple of months ago I flew out of Mexico City to Colombia.
I happened to walk by the Immigration 'booth'.
I did have them 'stamp me out' without actually knowing if I was required to.
I could have asked the officer, but I had a sense that my level of Spanish would lead to confusion?

IMHO its the Zihuatanejo airport, Ixtapa is the little sister to the north.

Seconded!

But remember we need nit-pickers. They keep us fly-by-the-seat-of-our-pants folks in line.

P.S. Isn't the full name "Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport?"

No, but some of the airlines do call it that.

Why? The airport is located in Zihua and the 3 letter identifier is ZIH.

I left ZIH for Canada via MEX a couple of weeks ago. I tried to do the migración process at ZIH, but understandably was told to do it at MEX.

The migración desk was at a kiosk. I left from Terminal 2. I used the migración kiosk near Sala K. There were numerous signs with arrows for migración.

The process took maybe a minute. There was no paperwork, just a scan of my passport and permanent resident card and a stamp in my passport.

We hope to complete the permanent resident process on our next trip in August. What do people do if they have a delay out of ZIH and/or a tight connection in MEX? We often have less than 1.5 hours to get from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 on our return to the US. I have never noticed these kiosks before at MEX. Are they easy to find? Inside or outside of security?

Remember you absolutely CANNOT skip this step. If you do, supposedly you will lose your residency.

The migración process is very quick now. My process at MEX took no more than a minute. My movement from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 has always been efficient and quick using the free “train”. I know some people choose to walk the distance instead.

The kiosks are inside of the secure area and are unobtrusive. It would be easy for a traveller to not notice them if they weren’t relevant to the traveller at the time. There are overhead signs indicating washrooms, departure salas, migración, etc.

Once you know that those signs are relevant for you, I’m guessing they will impose themselves on your attention

We are PRs also and did the departure ZIH to MEX to USA in April.
Domestic flight from ZiH so no need to do anything. From MEX we went to check our one bag on Aeromexico. There was an immigration desk right there that put a little sticker on our passport that got us through to the boarding. Easiest system we’ve encountered getting out of Mexico.
Don’t worry it will all work out.
