The physical heart of Zihuatanejo is our bay, but the socio-cultural heart of Zihuatanejo remains its zócalo, the main plaza also known as La Cancha Municipal. Though it can seem a mundane and monotonous place at times, especially since the municipal government allowed it to become so chaotically invaded with vendors of all sorts, it has always been the de facto heart of Zihuatanejo since it was a tiny village of fishermen and Agua de Correa was the principal population center. It harbors generations of memories of political campaigns, weekend dances, social events, cultural events, protests, and rallies as well as a place where many local families and young lovers have spent a lot of time strolling or taking in the scenery. My wife was born practically on what is now the basketball court back when her father was the telegraph operator and her family's home was just to the side of the plaza, being the first home in town with electricity where folks would come sit around the electric bulb in the evenings to chat, and my father-in-law, Don Fernando, made the first radio-phone call to Mexico City, eventually bringing the telegraph era to an end and beginning a more modern era where eventually telephones arrived, our current home being one of the first in the region to have one.
