Law enforcement tends to attract people with a bulldog mentality. That's good. In fact it's a important qualification for the job. But it's that same mentality that pushes them to occasionally step over the line and abuse their authority. That's why we need strong laws and decisive leadership to keep them on the straight and narrow. But we don't have that with ICE. Instead we have Trump and his Reichsmarschall, Herr Miller, who don't give a rat's ass about the law, who keep pushing them harder and harder until some of them, inevitably, commit abuses and a lot of innocent people get hurt.
I don't mind ICE as long as they do their jobs professionally and humanely and within the letter and spirit of the law. But when their superiors and a good chunk of the public look the other way at their abusive behavior, it has us rocketing toward a police state. We're more than halfway there already and there's no end in sight.
