Just to be clear, while sea turtles were still commonly eaten in the early 70’s, before any hotel opened its doors in Ixtapa, the practice was already in decline from what it had been. But killing cocodrilos has always been frowned upon by locals, as far as I know, long before they enjoyed legal protection. I lived across the road from the estero at La Ropa back then where cocodrilos lived and were never bothered. I am not surprised you would encounter poachers.
