Prison for visa overstay

This must be a USA thing. Last year in Mexico we overstayed our 180 day visa by 90 days. When we left and went through Mexican customs at the airport they just took our visas , stamped our passports ( we are Canadian) and that was it . No fines, no fees, no jail, no nothing.
