Update on Airport Customs Situation

Hi all,
are there any recent experiences with customs at the airport? Previous posts had warned that baggage searches were deliberately intrusive, applied to everyone and designed to extract bogus duties on arriving international passengers.
Is this practice still in force? Should I stick with carry-on only?
