very sad, what seems to be the driving force behind the uptick in this violence?

The ever-increasing multi-BILLION-dollar a year black market driven by U.S. consumption of stupidly banned recreational substances. The problem continues worsening because the same old failed policies remain in place. Imagine how strong the U.S. mafias would have grown had alcohol remained prohibited for more than 13 years. As it was, it took another 40-50 years just to get a handle on them. Multiply that by 100 and that's what we're up against here in Mexico. Talk about self-inflicted wounds...
