As I understand addiction, it is not all about a better high, but about maintaining the body's need for the drug in order to be able to function. This is demonstrated by withdrawal symptoms, which can be severe and fatal. In short, in order to avoid being 'dope sick', the addict needs a certain amount of the drug just to feel 'normal'. If you are a heavy coffee drinker and gave it up, or ever tried to quit smoking, you will know what much milder withdrawal symptoms are. Or think of a really bad hangover, that is withdrawal too. Many addicts can work and maintain regular lifestyles, if they can have a minimal amount of the drug their body has learned to rely on. This doesn't mean getting high anymore, but just staying alive, maintaining breathing.
I agree that attending an NA meeting may benefit many who want to learn more.
