90% of the time after looking at a message, the message will not show red (that shows that I read the message) when I go back to messages.... What am I doing wrong?

You're not doing anything wrong. It's your browser. What browser are you using?

With Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Safari everything seems to work normally with standard settings, but Firefox seems not to acknowledge I've visited a message until I refresh the browser. Does that describe what you're seeing?
