La Vida SenZIHlla y Dichosa
Early this Monday evening we got a very welcome light rain that cooled things down nicely after a hot sunny day. Just perfect! It looks like we're in for several days of this while an area of tropical disturbance moves along our coastline and forms up into a hurricane. High waves and gusting winds are also expected during the next few days. Take precautions.
For as long as I can remember we've always used 3-speed pedestal fans made by Man, a Mexican company, for their reliability and quiet. They seem to last us an average of 12 to 15 years, using them daily and nightly, which I consider pretty darn good for our salt-air environment. After wearing out yet another one that kept us awake squealing much of last night, we just bought another one at one of our favorite stores, Mueblerías del Centro, for under a thousand pesos. You'll see them sold online for considerably more. They require a bit of TLC, cleaning them regularly and when they get old taking them to an expert we know for a bit of reconditioning, but it's always worth it. They do exactly what we need our fans to do, and after assembling yet another, our siesta was made absolutely blissful by our new fan. Small things like the right fan make life here easier and more enjoyable for us working-class Mexicans.
After having one of our two tinacos run dry, we called for a pipa today that came right around noon when the sun was at its celestial apex. After a lifetime of living, playing and working under the tropical sun, I tend to avoid it as much as possible since I'm tired of having pieces of me cut off, but I managed to get a bit of a tan today in the 20 minutes or so I was on our rooftop filling tinacos. It doesn't take much at this time of year. I hope all of you take better care of your skin than I did during my lifetime. They didn't make reef-safe sunblock when I worked as a tour guide at Buck Island in St. Croix. It didn't even exist until a few years ago. Though I'm paying the price today, I had more fun in some beautiful places than most folks ever do. However, since I knew suntan and sunblock lotions were harmful for the environments where I lived and played, I mostly avoided them. Here's some info to help folks avoid harming the environment while literally saving their skin. I hope you find it useful.
