"People don't like to be confused by the facts. The truth is that there is no level of alcohol that is safe."

Interesting comment. I think the word "safe" (ie,lack thereof) connotes a sense of impending or immediate doom to most persons. Yet plenty of old-timers (George Burns, who lived to 100, comes to mind) freely admit they been having a gin martini a night--actually 2 for George-- for decades. It reminds me of the dermatologist who warns us to wear long-sleeved shirts on a sunny day--do you know anyone who actually does this? I don't.
Let's remember that Keith Richards lived much much longer than exercise-obsessed health guru Jim Fixx...
I guess my point is, we could all live longer if we watched Joel Osteen preach every night, tucking into bed at 10 PM after a cursory read of Corinthians, or Proust, followed by jumping jacks and Himalayan bath salts, and never had a beer or smoked a joint and never wandered around the neighborhood after dark for fear of getting mugged, or never had sex for fear of papilloma or chlamydia. Even Jesus Christ made a distinction between drinking and wanton drunkenness...if I remember my New Testament.
“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.”
So go out and eat, drink and be merry--tomorrow you may be in Utah.

My apologies as the point of the post may have been misconstrued. It was not an exhortation to abstain entirely from alcohol. The post was meant to counter the common misconception that moderate drinking is actually good for you. The science shows it is not.

Having said that, we should remember the immortal words of John Mortimer's character, the lawyer Rumpole of the Bailey: "No pleasurable vice is worth giving up for an extra five years in the Sunnyvale Rest Home."
