Many downtown businesses located on the pedestrian streets that are currently being repaved, removing the beautiful adoquín paving stones and replacing them with the mayor's cement same as he used on the waterfront walkway, have had to close for several weeks while this totally unnecessary construction takes place. Here we are nearing the end of our tourist season where every peso counts because after Semana Santa we'll only see weekend tourists until school lets out at in the middle of July. The mayor offers no compensation for their economic losses, only a practiced politician's smile. I feel bad for my friends and neighbors who are losing money at this critical time while most folks are still trying to recover from the forced closures during the pandemia.

Downtown Zihuatanejo seemed very slow this Monday evening. Hardly anyone around. Saw our dear old friend Johnny Ellis dining at Sirena Gorda.

It looks like there's a large fire somewhere in Ixtapa from the smoke that can be seen spreading towards Zihuatanejo over the hills. I imagine it will settle and cause some of us problems tonight and in the morning until the sun warms things up. So stay alert. Acapulco has had several large fires raging during most of last week, and they continue burning. It's the fire season, and this one is expected to be bad due to the dryness from so little rain last year.
