"The smoke, of course, comes from campesinos burning fields to plant maíz, frijól and calabasa. Some years are worse than others. If we're lucky, the smokiness will stay like it is now, barely noticeable. But I've lived through some really bad years here where it looks like a war zone where everyone lost,"

It is too bad education has not reached this part of the world. Not only can this be terrible for the soil and crop success. It is a DISASTER for our climate.

Does it not make more sense to plow under the remnants of last season's crops? It seems with burning, you are just wasting organic material that would be useful fertilizer for the new season of plants. Any agriculturists out there in Zihuatanejo.net land?

You all make erroneous assumptions about local farming that does most of the burning. Most crops in this season are cultivated in tlacololes on hillsides. There's no plowing. No oxen. No mules. No tractors. Just thousands of years of experience and a lot of hard work. The crops they plant have to get them though a long dry season.

And then there are the terrorists who are currently drone-bombing communities in the sierra of Petatlán and Técpan so that their inhabitants will abandon their communities. They've also started several of the recent big fires causing smoke along our coast.
