The real disaster for our climate
It is too bad education has not reached this part of the world. Not only can this be terrible for the soil and crop success. It is a DISASTER for our climate.
I’m not a fan of agricultural slash and burn. It doesn’t just look bad, but particulates in smoke present health hazards. But it is not “a DISASTER for our climate”. The release of carbon from agricultural material occurs whether it is done quickly by burning, or more slowly by decomposition.
The real sources of disaster for our climate don’t come from poor people, they come from affluent people.
Affluent people who fly from Canada and the US on planes both using fossil fuels and producing contrails that exacerbate global warming.
Affluent people who drive around using fossil fuels in their internal combustion SUVs to get the the airport to get on those planes.
Affluent people who travel to the tropics, then crank up the air conditioning to make their room feel like the place they just flew in from.
And the electricity they use for that air conditioning comes from Petacalco.
The Petacalco power complex has had significant negative impacts on human health, marine life, fisheries and agriculture in northwestern Guerrero state. The Petacalco plant burns an average of 7 million tons of coal per year and has been described as one of the world's worst polluters. Its annual emissions of carbon dioxide and mercury (over 15 million tons, and 711 tons, respectively) are the highest of any power plant in Mexico.
In addition, it ranks second nationally in annual emissions of nitrous oxide (228 tons) and methane (152 tons), third in nitric oxide (over 24,000 tons), and fifth in sulfur dioxide (152 tons per year).
Air and water pollution traceable to the plant have created multiple negative impacts for surrounding communities, including depletion of fisheries, loss of mangrove habitat, and high concentrations of coal ash and other particulates that threaten residents' health.
Affluent people who invest in and use the products of Coca Cola, Pepsi, Nestlé, and Danone.
More than 20 per cent of all branded pollution is linked to four brands: The Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo, Nestlé, and Danone.

“It is too bad education has not reached this part of the world.”?
We don’t have to search out subsistence farmers in a foreign country when it comes to “DISASTER for our climate”. We just have to look in the mirror.
