The local mayor's race is simply a question of how many votes can the current mayor buy with the earnings he made drowning Zihuatanejo under his cement these past 6 years, because the tendency is that about 2/3 of the voters want to vote for Morena.
Many thanks for the comprehensive analysis, Rob. Personally, I love that behind your candid cynicism is more than a glimmer of hope. Here is an article from today's Washington Post about the upcoming Mexican elections and the accompanying violence. Let us pray that Ms. Sheinbaum is up to the task ahead of her. First order of business, legalize the pharmaceuticals at the Federal level and take away a portion of the cartels' income. Second, ping the U.S. and Canada to do the same.
The elections next door: Mexico’s cartels pick candidates, kill rivals
Note: Link to article is good for 30 days after this post.
Several things jump out at me. Mainly, the article is about a PRI candidate. The PRI is who made this mess of Mexico. Career politician of a family of politicians. Tells me he's a cacique of sorts. Also, WaPo has not been bashful about being propagandistic against AMLO. Carlos Loret de Mora writes for WaPo. He's the so-called journalist who used to work with corrupt PRI governments and Televisa staging crime scenes for TV. So from a Mexican point of view, WaPo is tainted journalism in regards to Mexican political affairs.
A quote attributed to Ochoa says it all: "They (other political parties) let different cartels in," he said. "They didn’t draw the line." So we're supposed to think the PRI was the good guy for only allowing to operate the cartels they did who surely paid them nice bribes.
And the radio conversation between Ochoa's guaruras or bodyguards sounds contrived, staged. Not professional. Made for the reporter. But that could just be my imagination.
WaPo writes: "President Andrés Manuel López Obrador accuses the opposition and media of exaggerating the violence in places such as Chiapas." AMLO does not consider the electoral violence to be exaggerated, though there have been some phony or exaggerated claims such as by the opposition's presidential candidate recently, and his comments here were used totally out of context. Once again, WaPo shows their anti-AMLO bias by even using the comment here in such a manner.
I may be wrong, but it seems to me that most of the threatened and murdered candidates have been Morena. But that could just be my perception from Mexico's news sources. Odd they picked a PRI candidate to interview.
Any candidate who requests it can get protection by the Guardia Nacional. I can't help but notice no Guardia Nacional appear in any of the photos. Is this article a propaganda piece? It's a fair question.
Thanks for posting the article. Always nice to know what kettle of worms WaPo is stirring up regarding Mexico.
So, as always, read all you can from as many sources as you can, but always consider the source's own bias when trying to find useful information.
