This Saturday was the day we celebrate the men and women of Mexico's navy as well as the men and women of the sea including our fishermen. It's a big yearly celebration that started off with a few dozen swimmers swimming across the bay from Playa Principal next to the pier to Las Gatas and back. Something my wife has done in her younger years. She was also the first person to hug the first swimmer to arrive this year.

This Sunday Mexico holds its day of nationwide elections. Election day in Mexico is always held on the first Sunday in June in order to facilitate voter turnout. We will be voting for local, state and national officials including a new presidente, in this case likely to be Mexico's first presidenta. Because of the elections, the state government has declared ley seca for Saturday and Sunday, meaning no alcohol will be sold in stores or restaurants. We hope people will be respectful, but my experience living in tourist destination has taught me that many tourists seem to think they need to spend as much of their vacation as highly inebriated as possible, so I expect there will be a few wild and crazy guys and gals. Ni modo.

For those of you who are Mexican citizens and who have your credencial INE, here's how to locate the casilla where you can vote. Please do. Be aware that there will be some casillas known as casillas especiales where voters who are out of their district for one reason or another can vote, but only in the national elections. A few secciones will have 2 casillas, one for residents whose names are on local voting rolls, and the special casillas for tourists. So be careful you don't get in the wrong line and then find out you can't vote locally because you went to the casilla especial. Casillas especiales are identified by having "ESPECIAL" or similar after the sección number (example: Secc. 1621 ESP 1). Check the casilla identification poster that should be hanging in view at the polling place. One of the casillas especiales is in the plaza next to the museum in downtown Zihuatanejo. There should also be one in the commercial zone of Ixtapa. I'm not sure where else. My experience as a former presidente de casilla is that most people vote early, and the rest of the day there are no lines. Here are the locations of the casillas especiales:

  • Playa Linda junto al Oxxo (1644 ESP 2)
  • Ixtapa frente al kiosko (1644 ESP 1)
  • Junto al Museo Costa Grande (1621 ESP 1)
  • Junto a llantera García a un costado de Nissan (1604 ESP 1)
  • Aeropuerto de Zihuatanejo (1652 ESP 1)

[image]If you're looking for a truly relaxing B&B lodging overlooking the jungle in La Ropa, I highly recommend Casa Arcoíris. The view of the sunset over the treetops from their pool is breathtaking, and the peace and quiet will relieve you of any stress. Five comfortable suites with air conditioning, TV, and wi-fi access at this LGBTQ-friendly lodging make it somewhat exclusive and definitely enchanting. Mention ZihuaRob's and get a discount.

Los pescadores de Zihuatanejo venden el fruto de sus labores nocturnos y luego celebran Día de la Marina, un día cuando celebramos todos los hombres y mujeres del mar. Una tradición en nuestro puerto desde hace muchas décadas.
