IniZIHo otro Año Nuevo
The festivities of Año Nuevo continued into the wee hours on the downtown waterfront, and crowds of people were dancing and milling about throughout the night. The fireworks fortunately didn't catch anything on fire that I'm aware of, though the gunfire from the hillsides was apparent if you listened for it. I haven't heard of any injuries or damages from last night's fireworks, though the birds were missing from the mangroves where they live by the canal this morning. I was impressed that the local waterfront restaurants seemed to moderate their noise levels as did the rock band we saw at the Cancha Municipal. That was a very welcome change from previous years. Hope it wasn't a fluke. It was a wonderful evening for our visitors from what I could see. We enjoyed watching a bit of it from our rooftop, and it was a wonderful scene. Yes, the place was a mess this morning, but not as bad as we've seen in previous years, and once again folks were out early staking their claim to choice spots on the beach to spend their day.
We didn't see that folks were abusing any freedoms on the downtown beach even though it isn't Blue Flag. People played music at very respectable levels, not blasting or bothering others. They cleaned up after themselves and their pets. I have to say it sure looked like most people were model visitors who acted responsibly. And they were enjoying themselves on the beach as it is supposed to be enjoyed without draconian rules, without being searched or treated like criminals or parasites as at the Blue Flag beaches.
Most of the downtown businesses and restaurants were closed today since it's an official holiday, but this Thursday, jueves pozolero, things should return somewhat to normal. Expect the banks to be crowded with folks due to the quincena.
We did see more of our extranjero visitors today than were out yesterday. After this weekend things should return to normal, and folks should be able to move about more freely without all the crowds everywhere. Whole local merchants are certainly thankful for all the visitors, I continue believing we could do a better job targeting our preferred market better instead of relying on such large crowds that tax our services to the limit and leave mountains of garbage to be disposed of.
There have been daily whale sightings in our coastal region. Now is an excellent time to charter a boat for whale watching and go see them up close along with other marine residents including dolphins and rays. I highly recommend the services of Zihuatanejo Ixtapa Charters. They have vessels for all occasions. Take your pick and enjoy an unforgettable day on the ocean in our paradise.
