Gentle breezes continue keeping our daytime temperatures mild while cool air continues filtering down from the sierra at night. But the current mar de fondo event has made swimming in the open ocean dangerous in many places. Please respect the black flags when they are displayed unless you are an expert swimmer in the ocean. Don't risk your life and those of our local lifeguards. The current mar de fondo event is expected to last at least through Saturday.

Things should start getting interesting this Friday as the first wave of vacationers begin to arrive for Semana Santa. I feel bad for those arriving by bus. The buses are being parked at Las Salinas, in an area that is unhealthy due to contaminated dust and the nearby discharge of "gray water", far from the traditional lodgings used by many bus groups, and frankly in a dangerous area thanks to the abandoned building nearby where there have been numerous murders that the local authorities have ignored their responsibility to deal with for decades in their eagerness to enrich themselves while in office. We and our visitors deserve better.

This week has been the calm before the storm. Very few visitors around. Beaches mostly empty. Few customers in most restaurants. Slow sales at most shops. It's been a pleasure enjoying the relative peace and quiet knowing what's about to come. If you've never been here during Semana Santa, you're in for an "adventure", let's call it. It can get crowded fast. Restaurants will be crowded. Streets will be crowded and noisy. Beaches will be crowded. There will be no place to park. People will be partying and making noise all night long. And there is likely to be trash everywhere and some destruction of public and private property, sometimes accidental, sometimes on purpose. People may think this is a Mexican thing, but when I lived in Florida it was exactly the same there during peak tourist season. So buckle up and hope for the best. This is what tourism is all about.

Remember to do your banking ASAP before the crowds arrive and drain all the ATMs.
