Once again, due to the imminent arrival of tropical storm Erick, which is expected to become a hurricane, classes are suspended in Guerrero this Wednesday and Thursday. If you are currently in the region, please keep an eye on our local weather.

While Erick isn't currently expected to arrive in Zihuatanejo as a hurricane, it's best to expect that it will. One tiny wobble in the storm's path can mean the difference of hundreds of kilometers of where it's expected to make landfall. But I expect the Sierra Madre del Sur will tear it apart, and that we'll only get some gusty winds and rains. Though it could be a lot of rain.

We just had a brief little rain come out of the west at us this Tuesday evening, which is unusual, but it's a sign that the tropical storm is closing in and sucking our weather its way. Heavy dark bruised clouds rolled over us with thunder and lightning and a nice soaking-but-not-torrential rain. Cooled things down nicely, and it's still gently raining. Let's hope the ground doesn't get too saturated before the real rain starts. Don't need any mudslides.

I don't expect that the municipal government will warn people not to swim in Zihuatanejo bay in spite of the rains, though if they were serious about protecting the public's health they would, but as a general rule of thumb it's a good idea NOT to swim in our bay for at least 2 days after any heavy rain.
