On a more serious note, surge protectors are your friend.
Some people opt for an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) along with a surge protector. They are expensive but will keep your devices running for a few minutes giving you time to shut them down. Some even have software that will notify your computer to shut itself down in the event no one is monitoring the computer.
