A real good book about the development of Mexican railways is “The Civilizing Machine: A Cultural History of Mexican Railroads, 1876-1910” by Michael Matthews . I read it in Kindle over the last year and really enjoyed it. Not exactly a compelling beach read - the title is accurate - but very interesting. In Canada the railway also intended to unite the Country but from East to West. I want to a Mexican choo choo!
