Sometime during the middle of Saturday night a storm rolled through and it rained a little. I was surprised I missed it, but I recall seeing lightning off to the southeast before going to sleep.

Sunday morning was absolutely beautiful! Some high clouds delayed the bright sun for a while, but not long enough to bother visitors, some who were at the beach and swimming in the bay before the sun even came up. The beaches quickly filled up, and the water taxis were busy early and throughout the day ferrying people to Las Gatas. During the late afternoon thunderclouds started booming over the sierra. There was a rush to get everyone back from Las Gatas, but fortunately the rain held off and they didn't have to dash across the bay in the rain. Also, the delayed rain gave the folks at the Cancha Municipal time to cover up all the electric equipment with plastic and STILL put on a show with some good music for the hundreds of spectators.

For all the high numbers of visitors and high occupation rates at the hotels, it still isn't translating into sales for local merchants and restaurants. Too many who continue to suffer extremely slow sales, and I fear many won't survive until the next season. Those who own their places of business have a huge advantage over those who have to pay rents, because rent rates never go down even when there's no tourism. But tourism "authorities" boast body counts and justify their jobs by increased percentages of people, ignoring that the only people benefiting are the big hotels, travel agents, Oxxo, and some beachfront restaurants. The community continues getting poorer as its population grows, prices rise and cycles of poverty repeat themselves. The federal government is doing wonders to bring poverty levels down, but Guerrero is one of the few states where progress is elusive. Unfortunately too many "authorities" believe Guerrero just needs to diversify its tourist offerings, which is simply stupid. They want to see Guerrero look like Miami Beach from Acapulco to La Unión. What a disaster in every sense that would be! The people who would benefit most are the cement and construction companies. Guerrero needs to DIVERSIFY ITS ECONOMY, because tourism is an extremely fickle industry. I keep hoping more intelligent heads will prevail and announce the opening of some new, hopefully clean industries here, especially related to our agricultural sector, but year after year, decade after decade, nothing of substance. *sigh*
