Días de Muchas EmoZIHones
A night of relatively cool and refreshing sleeping weather was followed by a humid morning that warmed quickly as the sun came out. By 8:00 A.M. when the Viacrucis took place on Calle Juan N. Álvarez in downtown Zihuatanejo, people were noticeably perspiring in the procession. The temperature must've gone from around 20°C to almost 30°C in less than an hour. But the faithful never waivered as they stopped at the Quinta Estación in front of our home, heard the relevant sermon, said a prayer, and went singing to the Sexta Estación of the Viacrucis carrying the almost-life-sized statue of Jesus carrying a cross. Many quite emotional recalling the terrible events of the crucifixion of Jesus. It's always a beautiful and moving sight, even for this unrepentant atheist.
The first reported drowning victim of Semana Santa occurred when a tourist went missing Thursday afternoon at Playa Linda. His body was found this Friday evening. The local government always makes a big show out of all the extra vigilance and security, and yet we always see drownings, car burglaries and carjackings at pretty much the same levels year after year.
I was watching swimmers in the bay in front of our home at Playa Principal when the big waves from the mar de fondo effect came rolling in, seemingly out of nowhere. One minute fairly small 1-foot-high waves, the next minute they were reaching around 2 meters. Almost everyone immediately got out of the water except one person who kept diving under the increasingly larger waves. For folks who are good swimmers, these waves aren't a problem, but most of our visitors aren't good swimmers who are confident in the ocean.
I can't imagine it was much fun embarking from or disembarking at on the pier at Playa Linda where the pier is frankly dangerous and should be closed and relocated to Playa Quieta. It was difficult enough at the municipal pier in Zihuatanejo as boatload after boatload of day-trippers returned from Las Gatas. Everyone excited, smiling and a bit worn out from a fun day at the beach. I expect Playa Linda's pier will be closed this Saturday. Zihuatanejo's bay might even be closed since the waves are expected to be even higher. Watching the beach cams of Playa El Palmar in Ixtapa one could see the waves were washing up over the entire beach today, and most people were NOT on the beach. Only a few adventurous folks were trying to walk the beach while dodging the enormous swells that were well over 2 meters high. The waves are expected to peak this Saturday at around 8 feet. Sunday they will be slightly smaller, but still well over 2 meters. Surfers are loving it!
The Eco-Tianguis "Sanka" happens every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 1:40 p.m. in the small plaza in front of the Vicente Guerrero school, across the street from the Museo Arqueológico de la Costa Grande in downtown Zihuatanejo by the waterfront where La Boquita canal runs into the bay. Besides wonderful handcrafts, they feature a variety of homegrown produce, fresh foods including pastries, breads and tamales, fresh coffee, juices and mezcal.

For a totally relaxing Bed & Breakfast lodging overlooking the remaining jungle in La Ropa, I highly recommend a hidden gem called Casa Arcoíris. The view of the sunset over the treetops from their pool is breathtaking, and the peace and quiet will relieve you of any stress. Five comfortable suites with air conditioning, TV, and Wi-Fi access at this LGBTQ-friendly lodging make it somewhat exclusive and definitely enchanting. Mention ZihuaRob's and get a discount.
