Temporary Residency and TIP

In theory, there is a way to send it to Mexico City and get it cancelled. In many years of moderating the traveling in Mexico forum for Good Sam, etc, I have never heard of anyone being successful.

It may be a bit of a different issue, but I was successful in getting a TIP cancelled. In Feb/07, my vehicle was stolen in Zihua and found 2 or 3 days later, up in the sierra, smashed beyond repair. The insurance company (Qualitas) was no help in getting the TIP canceled for the stolen/write-off vehicle. In fact, When we tried to re-enter Mexico, with my "new" vehicle the following season, we were denied entry because the computer showed we still had a vehicle in Mexico.
(I had all the documentation, police report, photos, insurance settlement, etc to explain what had happened, but Mexican Customs wouldn't budge. Fortunately, our replacement vehicle was registered in both my and my wife's name, so the workaround....I call it a "Mexican workaround".....was to get the new TIP in my wife's name, which kept the computer happy and saved us a 3000 km trip home.)
Anyway, the following spring, I put all my documentation together, sent it to Aduana in Mexico and, maybe 3 months later, they mailed an official cancellation of the original TIP. I've carried that cancellation with me every time we've entered Mexico since ....even when we flew.
