Un BueníZIHmo Aguacero
Wednesday night we got another nice but brief rain that washed away some more of the accumulated dust and left the air smelling fresh and clean. It also brought the temperature down enough to make for perfect sleeping weather accompanied by the sound of the waves on the beach in front of our home. Needless to say, we feel extremely privileged to live where we do.
I didn't feel a thing. You? I certainly prefer that there are many little quakes than any big ones.
The mar de fondo has subsided slightly, but it's expected to return with even bigger waves this weekend at the same time we might see a tropical storm or possibly a hurricane make landfall somewhere along our coast, likely near Acapulco, and bring us some heavy rains and strong winds here in Zihuatanejo. For those of you who are here, stay alert!
After a hot and humid day, the rain finally arrived late this afternoon right before sunset. Heavy at times, certain to cause flooding in all the regular areas and possibly some new ones with all the new cement around town. But it has brought the temperature down and made the air smell sweet and clean, and it promises to be another wonderful night for relaxing and sleeping.
The bay is going to be too nasty for safely swimming in for the next week or so. Bad news for vacationers who will swim in it anyway. Hopefully they won't suffer any serious ear, skin or eye infections. I almost lost my hearing from swimming in the seemingly clear waters of Christiansted Harbor in St. Croix when I was 13 even though I'd grown up swimming in the Ohio River. So I learned to be more careful where I swam. If you saw our beaches after a heavy rain, especially the first few rains of the season, you'd know why I warn not to swim in the bay afterwards. And even though we try to be cleaner than we once were, the crap that washes into the bay has been the same or worse after almost every rain during every year that I've lived here. It boggles the mind. All the new construction on the hillsides, the loss of trees and woodlands and the ever increasing population just keeps making it worse.
Mexico's last friendly match before the Copa Mundial begins next week is tonight against Serbia. So excuse me if I'm not too chatty and I cut my post a little short tonight. Gotta get right and enjoy the world's most popular sport.
Paradise may have once been lost, but when you arrive at this lodging you'll know you've truly found it. Las pangas de los pescadores están amontonados en Playa Principal de Zihuatanejo durante el atardecer para tratar de protegerlas de las olas del evento de mar de fondo.
