If only everyone picked up at least a little instead of acting like it's normal and ignoring it or leaving it for the beach sweepers.
Not trying to earn a medal, but for what it is worth, whenever I go into the water, when I exit, I must remove at least one piece of plastic or other man-made item that does not belong in the ocean. Although sometimes it feels like a futile gesture, it reminds me of the The Star Thrower, also referred to as The Starfish Story. A man is watching a boy throwing stranded starfish back into the ocean. The man remarks that there are miles of beach and countless starfish, so the boy's efforts can't possibly make a difference. The boy picks up a single starfish, throws it into the waves, and replies, "It made a difference for that one."I know. Kinda' hokey, but sincere.
That's basically what some people say to me, and that's my thinking, too. It makes a difference to that spot on the beach not to have plastic crap on it. ¡GRACIAS!
What really breaks my heart is to see hermit crabs using plastic crap for shells because people take all the shells off the beach, something I've simply never done nor felt a need to. Shells look prettier on the beach, other marine animals need them, and their descomposition in the ocean helps to deacidify the ocean.
