Saturday night was noisier than usual in downtown Zihuatanejo. Incredibly loud portable speakers make their owners wandering discotheques. A shame to see the scarce resources, i.e., rare earth materials, necessary for such speakers wasted so frivolously. And it would be nice if the local government did their job to help keep the volume down. Let folks party, but we don't need to hear it a block away. All the additional police in town for the holidays, but you'd never know it, and how can police from other places know what the local codes and laws are?

Rain was visible on the ocean's horizon this Sunday morning, and it rained on Cerro Viejo during the middle of the day, but still nothing in downtown Zihuatanejo. It keeps avoiding us. The forecast gives us a 50% chance of rain during the middle of the coming week. Fingers crossed.

While beachfront restaurants continue receiving a great deal of mostly low-budget visitors during the day, downtown shops struggle. It's impossible to prosper selling mostly trinkets and souvenirs for under a hundred pesos. But that appears to be about the extent of spending for most visitors so far this summer season. We're getting too few visitors with the purchasing power our tourism-dependent economy needs. So the occupancy numbers for Ixtapa may look high, but the purchasing power of too many visitors is extremely low, and it's hurting local businesses. This isn't progress. It's a lack of proper targeted marketing, the actual hard work that none of our so-called tourism authorities working for the local government appear to be doing, though they travel far and wide and attend many events and parties. I miss the local folks who actually used to do this work well back in the 90's. I can only reach so many people and answer so many of their questions through my meager efforts.

The more locals I speak with, the more I see how widely rejected "the scene of the crime" at the pier entrance is. The most common query I hear is "What was the mayor thinking?"

The surf continues looking pretty decent for the coming week and especially next weekend.

Don't expect to find much fish for sale at the waterfront this Monday morning. It's traditional that local fishermen don't go out to fish Sunday night but instead spend it with their families. Los lunes ni las gallinas ponen.

In our home we eat Mexican fare almost every single day, and I still find myself making groaning noises of ecstasy with almost every bite, even when my tortillas are cold. I just may be the luckiest Gringo in Mexico. ;-)

[image]One of the loveliest vacation lodgings at La Ropa and one of my very favorite vacation rentals to promote is Villa Zanzibar, a charming 3-bedroom private villa tucked away in the old original La Ropa community at the southern end of the beach a short easy walk up from the waterfront. Located in one of the most peaceful areas of our community, this is a place to feel relaxed and at home. (click to enlarge photo)
