This Thursday was another scorcher, though a tad milder than Wednesday. Once again, storm clouds were visible popping up to the southeast, but as they got closer they just swerved around us. Uncanny. ¡Tamos sala'o!

I hope everyone who partook enjoyed their pozole this Thursday. It's not just a dish from Guerrero, it's an entire experience. All the condiments and fixin's that go into it are part of it. Different places have different side dishes and presentations. A shot of mezcal is de rigueur. Unfortunately the commercialization of mezcal for consumption abroad, mostly in the USA, is having a negative effect on the quality of the mezcal being made available. We can still get artisanal mezcal, but it's only a matter of time before it gets scooped up by larger distributors and ruined.

We've really been enjoying the Concacaf Leagues' Cup being played between the USA, Canada, and Mexico. We like the Concacaf refereeing better than all the violence that we all saw the refs allow in the FIFA World Cup. We prefer to watch talent and skill instead of violence and acting. There are games almost daily right now.

The state's tourism office continues publishing their cifras alegres that on paper look like we're having a booming season here in Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa. While Ixtapa's hotels and the beachfront restaurants are doing business (the latter in the daytime), the story is much different for almost everyone else. This evening none of the waterfront restaurants were busy, but wouldn't you know, the municipal government was giving away free food on the beach to children and their families. Part of the summer vacation kids "festivities". But local shops and wandering merchants are having a hard time. The mayor assures us that the municipal government keeps a sharp eye on the 360 or so "registered" wandering vendors so as not to allow any more to intrude in Zihuatanejo. Yeah, right, until election time. Then they'll build another market and allow more land invasions. Like clockwork. ;-)

Still no lights at night at the municipal pier!

[image]Imagine waking up here in the mornings at one of the bungalows at Casa Ki on the beach in Troncones, a peaceful remote tropical village on the warm and friendly southern coast of Mexico: a place where natural beauty still rules and time seems to slow down and stretch out at the same time. A place where stress simply doesn't factor into one's daily routine. (click to enlarge image)

Calle Adelita al amanecer en Zihuatanejo. Se ve en el fondo el tocón de lo que fue un enorme guamúchil que fue derribado recientemente. Otro árbol grande y de muchos años perdido.
