There used to be many more trees including two huge amate trees that provided shade over much of the plaza, but the murderous cacique and ex-governor Rubén Figueroa Alcocer instructed the local government to remove them so that the plaza would lend itself more to large political rallies. So we lost most of the trees, gardens and seating on the whim of that disgraced bastard who had the gall to rename the plaza in his name, though the first thing the local citizens did when he was forced out of power due to the massacre at Aguas Blancas was remove all the signs that bore his name.
