The Whales are Back
I already have had a couple of reports of whale sightings in the Bahia de Potosi. Could be a big season. The Whales of Guerrero Research Project is returning and bringing volunteer scientists to count, map and photograph the local humpback population along with the various species of dolphins we have in local waters.
This is the first serious study, last year in the pilot program many whale flukes were photographed and matched with sightings in other areas, so the migration pattern is starting to emerge.
With a bit more funding, the is project is ready to expand to the fishermen and fishing guides of Zihuatanejo, who are eager to start learning how spot and safely approach whales so they are not frightened. An important goal is to develop a viable whale watching tour business in the area.
The Whales of Guerrero Project has no government support; now it is
just supported by interested people. If anyone would like to make a tax deductible contribution or participate as a citizen scientist,
the link is http://www.whalesinmexico.com/donate.htm . Thanks
