Last month we stayed in Barra, great for the kids by the way and easy cheap fishing. There was a couple days that I was getting bitten/stung by these tiny, size of a grain of black sand or smaller bugs. I could barely see them unless i looked closely. Our local guy told us they were called que quens? dont know spelling. I got bitten 40 plus times in 30 minutes waiting for food one afternoon. Does anyone know if they are mosquitos or biting flys? Are the they equivalent to "no see ums' stateside?

I’ve always used Autan to keep them away. Most convenience stores and farmacias carry it.

Thanks again for the Autan tip. My son is pretty allergic to mosquitos and we have been looking for a good spray.
OK, I have nothing to do with this company, nor do I sell this product.
I read about this product and owed a big gift to a friend so bought them two for their home in Maine. While I was at it I bought two for us.
OMG!!!!!!! It works. Mosquitoes, no see ums, wasps, ants, that's all we have used them for so far. Fabulous.
The couple we gifted them to left today and brought theirs with them and don't travel without them. He's a pilot and goes everywhere with it.
We very very rarely endorse a product, but this one is great. Do shop for them, the prices vary widely. When I bought our 4, eBay had the best price.

The boat captains in Barra are about half the cost of the ones in Zihuatanejo. about 100 dollars for 4 hours, depending on the boat. 4 hrs is fine for inshore fishing, its gets so hot that I am usually done early. They have basic trolling gear, which we caught a bunch of skipjack and bonitos. I brought my travel spinning rig which was fun casting in to the rocks, caught numerous species, Tigre was one of them. tastes good! If you want to go after sailfish, you may want to charter out of Zihuatanejo, bigger more comfortable boats like a cabin cruiser for $250 plus. We fished the rocks by the cliffs, Los Morros islas and of course the beaches.
Also try Avon skin so soft.

Although I'm pretty sure that the true meds must do the best job against the results of these tiny buggers (pun intended) on one of my many trips into Mexico starting back years ago I was caught by them while out without protection or cure and was attacked by a swarm of them. I was in a lot of pain, and scratching like mad, when a local Mexican man told me to go to the nearest bathroom and put some soap on the problem area. It worked like a charm and I have used this method several more times since then with the same results. Just keep it in mind as a back up.

For the itching we mostly use underarm deodorant, the stick kind. Works well.
And Skin So Soft, the original scent only, works well, but you'll smell like a cheap tart!!
