I'm chompin' at the bit, so anxious to get down there that I'm working on a trip in late September in addition to our usual March trip. I know that's kind of the end of the rainy season, so I'm wondering if much changes around there during that early fall stretch.
Specifically, are most of the restaurants open (assuming COVID is less restrictive by then)? How about water sports rentals and massage tents along the beach?

There is only one massage tent on Playa la Ropa and it is open whenever the beach is.
Restaurants aren't particularly seasonal, especially now. They may have changed from dinner only to breakfast and lunch, but you won't see any differences in what is open. We have lost a number of restaurants and businesses.
The weather is fabulous! We actually prefer the rainy months to the dry months, but love them all. We have a weather station, and what happens is that the humidity, contrary to popular belief, stays pretty constant year around. The winter temps run about 70 F low to about 83 high. In the summer it jumps to 80 low and 95 high. It doesn't take long to become fully accustomed to it!!!
Come visit anytime you can. It's wonderful.

Ditto. Except for being moister and more prone to rain, it's really not that much different, especially if you like the heat and the humidity. Air conditioning at night for sleeping is welcome, at least for this Zihua-phile.
As mentioned, several of the restaurants don't open until late October but there are still plenty of options available.
You will definitely feel the heat and humidity more during that time of the year. How rainy it is or isn't changes from year to year. It can be amazing to see the late afternoon thunderstorms roll in and drench the place for the evening. It is one of my favorite times of year because the foliage is fully green and hills are alive with flowers and fauna. Definitely expect more insects and mosquitos, but they are manageable.

You'll love it here at that time of year. You might even get to experience a hurricane! It'll be the peak season.
Rule of thumb is no swimming for a couple of days after a major rain. Light rains are no problem. Hopefully things will be "normal" and light afternoon showers that cool down the day's heat will be what you experience. If it stays overcast and rains for a few days straight it can actually get cooler than during the winter.

I love it here in September, but we definitely didn't care for tropical storm Hernan last year.
