As of today, since April 18, 2020 Zihuatanejo has registered a cumulative total of 2,193 confirmed cases of Covid-19 (3 more than yesterday), 180 that have resulted in fatalities, 26 that are currently active, and approximately 1,846 that have recovered. While a date has not been announced, Zihuatanejo is next on the list of communities in Guerrero to receive vaccines for people over 60 and the remaining medical community. According to the Presidente de la República, the military will participate in vaccinating people, which should help get folks vaccinated more quickly and efficiently.

Local hotels only report between 30% and 50% reservations for Semana Santa, according to different local news sources. I've been responding to a gazillion requests for rentals and hotel recommendations so I expect the number may actually be a bit higher. People are already showing up, and tomorrow is traditionally the day when things start getting crazy. We'll see. Unfortunately I'm hearing that reservations for sportfishing aren't what they should be for this time of year.

The city has erected some pallet furniture with swings and lighting next to Plaza Kioto for the visitors to relax on. Lupita checks out a swing with Kiki, our daughter's blind chihuahua that we're caring for that she rescued when a woman left her at the neighborhood trash bin in Ixtapa.

What a lovely romantic song -- a tourist returns looking in many restaurants for the waitress he's fallen for on a prior trip to Zihua and finally finds her in Col. la Madera!

And written by local songwriter, author and poet extraordinaire José Antonio "Toño" Urbina Bello. Before the remodelación infernal he sold his poems, music and books in Plaza del Artista and ran the small portable library there. Unfortunately it appears that part of the purpose of the remodelación infernal was to make it impossible for people like him to be able to work there or anywhere else along the waterfront anymore. A damn shame and a big loss to what little local culture we actually have, IMHO.

Oh, I loved that little lending library. Has he relocated somewhere else?

No, he has nowhere else to go, and I believe he is also still owed a considerable sum by the government. Like too many elderly Mexicans, he has only the federal government's pension program to live from. We're trying to help him, but we can't do much until we're all vaccinated.

The city has erected some pallet furniture with swings and lighting next to Plaza Kioto for the visitors to relax on.

When turning off from el Paseo de la Boquita to head towards la oficina de Telmex, right on that corner they also put up wooden type swings for kids in that area, which has several shade trees. Don't recall if there is other "pallet" furniture there, as well.
It is well lit up at night.

What I don't know is IF it was done for a particular special event, or just to add additional "recreation"?

It's also made with pallet furniture. And they decorated it with what looks like crepe paper wrapped around some of the trees and furniture. This is temporary because it won't last during the rainy season, all the wood would rot, but it's a real nice little touch for the holiday visitors who have been streaming in steadily since the day before yesterday. People have been using them to relax and dine, and more importantly putting their garbage in its place.
