Even though tourism is down, there are still plenty of tourists around. Mostly families. While hotels are currently limited to 40% occupancy, vacation rental homes have no such limitations, and smart tourists are seeking them out.
Be aware those of you who live here or who have businesses that although it is NOT being reported in any local media (to my knowledge), crime is most definitely on the rise in Zihuatanejo as jobs, tourists and sources of income disappear due to the ongoing pandemia. Nice shops less than a block away have suffered armed holdups in broad daylight, and delivery people who use motorbikes have said they are being held up and robbed more frequently. It's even worse in the hillside colonias. Unfortunately after dark in downtown Zihuatanejo, while we may see police quickly drive by, that's ALL they do. They are mostly absent, which might explain why some downtown bars continue operating though they were ordered closed by state decree. The only time we see a real police presence is when some politician is around. Not trying to scare anyone, only to heighten awareness and caution.
For those of you who live in Ixtapa, FONATUR just announced a CONSULTA PÚBLICA that citizens and residents may participate in regarding the partial urban development planning of Ixtapa in from August 16 to September 28. For more info and to register please visit www.ppduixtapa.mx . I hope some of you will get involved instead of letting corporate-owned hotels and out-of-town developers control the agenda and Ixtapa's future.
Nothing like a lazy restful Sunday during a pandemia. A good day for reading old postings here on the Message Board. See what was going on here years ago.
